Prof. Leocadio Rodriguez Mañas, coordinator

Servicio Madrileño de Salud (SERMAS)

Director of the Spanish Network on Aging and Frailty (RETICEF) of the Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness, Co-Director of the Toledo Study on Healthy Aging-TSHA, Principal Investigator in 36 research projects, three of them funded by the EU 7th Framework Program focused on the field of frailty in elderly people (see the box above).

Member of the Working Group on Health&Performance (Joint Program Innovation “More Years, Better Lives” of the European Union). Leader or member of commitments for several Action Plans and one of the candidates to run a Reference Site in the European Innovation Partnership on Active Healthy Aging (EIP-AHA). Coordinator of the Group on “Integrated Pathways of Care” in the A3 Action Plan (Prevention and early diagnosis of frailty and functional decline). Thus, Prof. Rodriguez Mañas has significant experience and leadership in coordinating these initiatives and tasks, and in working jointly with other members of the consortium,each participating in RETICEF, MID-Frail and/or FRAILOMIC, and involved in the WG on Health&Performance in the JPI or in the A3 Action Plan of the EIP-AHA. Advisor to Pan-American Health Organization, Spanish Ministry of Health and Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness. Participant in Guidelines and documents for clinical uses in older people. 


Dr. Marta Checa López

Fundación para la Investigación Biomédica del Hospital Universitario de Getafe (FIBHUG)

Dra. Marta Checa López Geriatrician of University Hospital of Getafe with special interest in frailty and diabetes in older patients. Dra. Checa has worked in several hospitals, with experience in managing complex frail patients in acute care. She has also participated as a consultant of older patients in different departments.


Dr. Jimmy Gonzales Turín

Dr. Gonzales was received training in geriatrics medicine in Hospital Universitario of Getafe (Madrid), currently is a geriatrician works in the same hospital and  Fundación para la Investigación Biomedica del Hospital Universitario de Getafe (FIB-HUG). He performed a master of Frail elderly and works with this type of population with Dr. Rodriguez Mañas.

Dr. Juan José Solano Jaurrieta

Hospital Monte Narajo - Servicio de Salud del Principado de Asturias (HMN-SESPA)

Dr Solano Jaurrieta is the director of the elderly medicine department. He is an Associate Professor of Geriatric Medicine in the department of medicine of Oviedo University. He is former president of the Spanish Society of Geriatric Medicine and member of the national committee of geriatrics. He is member of the National Network of Research in Aging (RETICEF). His interests are: health services organization, functional decline related to hospitalization in elderly medical and surgical patients, oxidative stress and inflammatory responses related to hypoxia. 

Ms. Inés Rey Hidalgo

Fundación para el Fomento en Asturias de la Investigación Científica Aplicada y la Tecnología (FICYT)

Ms. Inés Rey Hidalgo works as expert in the European projects department of FICYT. Since year 2004, she has been taking part in the consortium Galactea-Plus fostering the participation of companies and research centers in European projects, helping them write their proposals submitted to European projects, find partners to build the consortiums and manage their funded European projects. 

Prof. Alan Sinclair


Internationally-renowned geriatrician and diabetologist. Previous Dean of the Beds & Herts Postgraduate Medical School with significant background in diabetes education and training.Extensive clinical trial and research experience in diabetes and older people.Co-Chair, IDF Global Guideline on Diabetes Management for Older People, Leading a Global Initiative for the IAGG in Diabetes Education and Audit for Older People, Recipient of the 2013 IAGG Presidential Medal, WHO Expert in Diabetes and former Chair, Association of British Clinical Diabetologists (ABCD) Academic Sub-Committee (UK). Advisor to NICE and the Department of Health (UK).

Dr Angelo Scuteri

San Raffaele

Dr Angelo Scuteri has a leading role in the Cardiovascular Part of the SardiNIA Study. Dr Scuteri, is a Geriatrician in Rome and originally contributed to identifying the role of metabolic syndrome as a risk factor even in older subjects, and its role on accelerating arterial aging. He has also greatly contributed to the identification of arterial aging as a significant risk factor for cognitive dysfunction and to the diffusion of the concept of prevention of cognitive decline (in conjunction with the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association and the European Society of Hypertension) and is involved in the FRAILOMIC Innitiative, a large EU funded research project focused on frailty.

Prof. Roberto Bernabei

Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore (UCSC)

Prof. Roberto Bernabei, professor of Internal Medicine at the U.C.S.C. and chief of the Day-Hospital and Outpatient Geriatrics Department of the A. Gemelli University Hospital. Board member of EAMA, the European Academy for Medicine on Aging and member of the Consiglio Superiore di Sanità, the highest Italian sanitary advisory committee to the Ministry of Health and the Parliament. Prof. Bernabei's main research interests are in geriatric assessment, models of health services for elderly care, and geriatric pharmacoepidemiology. His research has demonstrated the cost-effectiveness of a home care service based on case management and the use of a comprehensive assessment instrument in decreasing hospital admissions and length of stay.

Dr Srikanth Bellary MD, FRCP

Aston University

Dr Srikanth Bellary MD, FRCP, is a Senior Lecturer in Metabolic medicine at Aston University and an Honorary Consultant Physician/Clinical Director in Diabetes and Endocrinology at the Heart of England NHS Foundation trust, Birmingham. His research interests include epidemiology of type 2 diabetes, diabetes and ethnicity and metabolic ageing. He was one of the main investigators of the UK Asian Diabetes Study (UKADS) and is currently the Chief investigator of Type 2 Diabetes in the Youth (T2DMY) study. He is also the Principal Investigator for two major EU funded studies on diabetes and frailty.

Dr Nichola Seare

Aston University

Dr Nichola Seare is the Director of Aston Heath Research and Innovation Cluster (AHRIC) and has 20 years’ experience of successful clinical research delivery across all sectors of the NHS and Industry. She is also the lead for the Clinical Trials Unit and manages a team of Project Managers; Statisticians; Data Managers and Clinical Trial Administrators.


This website arises from the project “FRAILCLINIC, Feasibility and effectiveness of the implementation of programs to screen and manage frail older patients in different clinical settings”, which has received funding from the European Union, in the framework of the Health Programme (2008-2013).
